The question is, why MPIR on linux and not GMP.

I've always thought that the only reason was that the MPIR licence was less restrictive than (or at least different from) the GMP licence. If that's not correct then I'd be interested to hear, though I don't really mind if this post of mine is ignored.

Note, too, that "our Swedish friend" has become a lot more amenable to Windows issues in recent years. Unfortunately, that amenability extends only to Windows builds of GMP that use mingw ports of gcc, and not to builds that use Microsoft compilers.
