Candyce, interesting point. That's a similar point that some of the women
at the MN Federation of Republican women were making at their meeting last
Saturday about Sayles-Belton.
You hear about Coleman and St Paul. We hear that Sayles-Belton is running
for reelection. We hear that Sayles-Belton has got the AFL-CIO
endorsement. However I don't get the sense that Sayle-Belton is as good at
boosting Minneapolis as Norm is for St Paul.
There was an interesting letter to the editor in yesterday's strib by
Audrey Toth of Minneapolis.
MPEA's contract
I am a recent retiree of the City of Minneapolis who worked
in Central Payroll for over 25 years. I know and like many
members of the Minneapolis Professional Employees
Association. My observation over the years has been that this
strong union was always one of the last to settle its contract,
and managed to get some perk that no one else received.
Examples are health insurance after 30 days, a $10 monthly
coupon for bus travel and "on-call" pay for some. "Exempt"
means "salaried." Exempt employees can come in late or leave
early, they are entitled to "administrative leave" for excess
hours worked, and they received a 4 percent increase as
opposed to 3 percent for the nonexempt.
Why should these few employees be treated any different
from other city employees? I am entitled to some back pay
whenever MPEA settles, but since I did not receive it last
year, my monthly pension was adversely affected. I also know
several MPEA members who terminated their voting rights,
because a strike would affect their retirement credit years. I
was appalled to learn that my council member is married to
MPEA's attorney, who petitioned the full council for support.
Please, City Council members, stand aside and let Labor
Relations do its job -- hopefully one that is fair to all city
employees.
-- Audrey Toth, Minneapolis.
Are there some MPEA members on this list? Any responses to this letter?....
