Today's paper tells of the closing of Lyndale Hardware, just over Mpls'
southern border. This is a blow to those of us in Minneapolis too.

That's because although we have serveral wonderful hardware stores
(Welna I and II, Guse, etc.) who have knowledgeable and long-term staff,
these stores aren't as big and LH and didn't carry that kind of
inventory. Consequently, oftentimes I was told to go to LH or that
hardware store in downtown St. Paul, I believe on west 7th???

Obviously, LH was a lot closer, and I really appreciated them especially
when the purchase was for an emergency repair.

Let me disclose my bias -- I am a big neighborhood hardware store fan; I
very seldom frequent Home Depot, Menards, Knox and others of that ilk.
Only when I need things that my local hardware store doesn't carry or
can't order. We need to patronize our local businesses if only to keep
them profitable so they can keep serving us -- is my philosophy.

Now, with True Value Hardware threatened by LRT development (anyone know
the latest on where that is?), and the next nearest "old time" hardware
store with a big inventory closing (because Richfield's City Fathers are
renovating their "downtown" area), are we going to be forced to drive to
St. Paul to find the knowledgeable clerks and access to those big
inventories?

Or, will another hardware store in South Mpls (or any other part of the
city) see this as an opportunity? I can't believe that because Lyndale
Garden Center is expanding their hardware area and hiring many of the
long-time LH employees that this will re-create the backup resource LH
once was to our smaller, neighborhood hardware stores.
