In response to Ross Kaplan's posting -

In many corporations part of their mission is to be a part of the community
and to take an active interest.  I think it is to their credit that they do
that and that their boards of directors have given them that directive.  I
think they should be applauded for their involvement.  Many things have been
done because of it - as pointed out by Wizard Marks and Mike Hohmann.  In a
perfect world perhaps the taxpayers could and should pay for those
improvements.  In the real world - it's really nice to have a good neighbor.
