I understand this is near your home and I respect
that. one thing I objected to is not knowing all the
players and their sides in this little melodrama.

As to self-interest certainly it always comes down to
that. My self-interest is not to feel ashamed at the
stupidity and mindlessness of our city government and
their horrible decisions.

I have no pecuniary interest and I have no horse in
this race. Though I know Basim and have for years i
assure you I would oppose him if I thought the
situation merited it.

As to this not being a suitable location for a motel
(I'm sure the folks at Americinn like to think of it
as a hotel as opposed to the perjorative image many of
us carry in our heads when we think the word "motel")
I disagree. Mr. Piehl, in case you had not looked
recently there is a four lane loud dirty freeway
running right outside what will be the hotel. The
street before it(2nd Ave.) is an exit from a freeway.

I might consider staying there for a few nights
especially if I were in town at the corporate office
of Wells Fargo Mortgage for training. I would be much
less inclined to build a house there or live everyday
for the next year or two in an apartment. And an
artist loft. Please.

I saw the Artist's housing built on Chicago Ave, at
32nd Street with formaldehyde laced particle board
rather than two inch plywood. If you can build such
places there without subsidy from the government I
half expect Basim would sell you the land for that
purpose just to see you fail and go belly up.

Ultimately this will be decided by Central
neighborhood and the City Council. I believe it serves
the greatest good and the best purpose in a project
such as Mr. Sabri.

You also might have made note of the fact that were I
the deciding vote or body I would leverage to make
improvements on the rest of the block a condition of
any variance. Nobody has responded to that idea no
doubt because if they were it would betray their true
interests which as near as I can tell is exacting some
degree of revenge.

At this point I would hope we all might agree to
disagree and move on til we can settle this dispute in
another forum. I, for one, have other interests such
as whether or not the state legislature passes a bill
making not wearing a seat-belt a primary offense which
to my reasoning only leaves the door wide open to
mischief and possible infringement of civil rights;
i.e., using this as justification for making race
based traffic stops.

Or here's another question: Ask yourself how much this
great artist loving city government really loves art
when it allows one of it's art bus benches on Hennepin
Avenue (God knows how much the bronze behemoth cost)
to be entombed by a snowbank for how many months now?
Please don't misunderstand me; i kinda like this
whimsical sculpture.
