In response to Britt Robson's question, I did not have any influence on, nor
did I advise the Governor about the DTED position or Yanisch's ascendancy to
it. I would concur that the Tim Penney connection probably did not hurt
Rebecca at all.

As an observer, I would comment that the Yanisch appointment surprised me
because her background does not fit either the tourism/travel focus that the
Governor originally wanted to emphasize, nor the international sales and
marketing experience that Jerry Carlson so perfectly provided.

Municipal level jobs development IS an area she is familiar with, and a
merger/reorganization of DES with DTED will require someone with good
administrative skills. Yanisch is a capable administrator, who will be
clearly positioning for higher office or private sector advancement. That,
in and of itself is not a bad thing. I like the notion that capable people
move in and out of government service rather than becoming "lifers."

Clearly, with a crowded field of Metro candidates for State Auditor in 2002,
a returning Wellstone for the '02 Senate race, and a Dutcher candidacy for
the Guv spot in '02, Yanisch made a prudent personal choice in returning to
high level management in government. Her stock can only rise on the
political scale for 2006.
