My thanks to Annie for looking into this, but after reading her and the
Park Board staff's replies I remember why I rarely petition my
government to change its ways--it doesn't accomplish anything. (So I
just work on campaigns.)
First, I didn't get to see what CM Goodman's response was. (It was
referenced.) That would have been interesting.
Second, there was finger-pointing back to a residents' group--I don't
know for sure if they are referring to the Downtown Minneapolis
Neighborhood Association or to the Towers Board. But are these groups
sovereign now, and responsible. We don't need to vote for City
officials anymore because if our part-time, volunteer boards write a
letter then a lousy city or Park Board or MCDA project is OK? (What
about when the neighborhood associations don't like a project--like with
Padilla-Speer? Those projects won't proceed then??)
Third, did the neighborhood group know about the giant lighted pylons?
Or is this like that earthen brem they introduced late in the LRT
project? And did the neighborhood agree to have the corner torn up in
the fall and kept a construction site throughout the winter? Who
actually was in charge of monitoring the construction, and did that
person think about the residents/taxpayers who pay their salaries? (I
think it was only my wife's complaint mid-winter that got them to at
least partially reopen the ice and snowbound 1st Street sidewalk between
the corner and the Towers 1st Street entrance. Probably saved them
$100,000's in potential injury lawsuits.)
I am looking forward to hearing about the future of the bus stop. And
BTW, whether there was a "official" stop there or not, I can assure
people that the northbound Rt. 4 bus always used to let me off there,
right at Gateway Park--right in front of the Towers--when I used to
commute back and forth from Opus a few years ago. And riders got picked
up there too. Right by the bus stop sign.
