McDonald to Announce Candidacy for Mayor of
Minneapolis

(10 April 01, Minneapolis) On Tuesday, April 17th at 4
p.m. Minneapolis Council Member Lisa McDonald
will formally announce her candidacy for Mayor of
Minneapolis. The press conference will be from 4 5
p.m. followed immediately by music, food, and drinks
until 8 p.m. The event will be at the Brave New
Workshop, 3001 Hennepin Avenue, 2nd Floor Calhoun
Square. The kickoff will highlight Council Member
McDonalds candidacy, her agenda and ideas surrounding
the City of Minneapolis and the 2001 Mayors
race.

When asked why she is making this bid for Mayor,
McDonald responds, The city has been rudderless for
the last 8 years. If elected, with the citizens of
this city, I will bring to the bully pulpit of the
Mayors office a vision for positive change: more
affordable housing, better transit, a focus on basic
city services, and the end of wasteful subsidies to
billion-dollar corporations.

I would be a different kind of mayor. I am
passionate, focused, enthusiastic and have the
leadership qualities necessary to rekindle our
commercial corridors, bring the citys finances in
line, and build a city which is greener and cleaner,
said Lisa McDonald.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio and a 25 year resident of
Minneapolis, Lisa McDonald was elected to the
Minneapolis City Council in 1993. Previously to being
elected, Lisa worked in two shelters for the homeless,

operated her own business as a pastry chef, and worked
as a waitress. From 1991 to 1993 she was Executive
Director of the Greater Lake Street Council. She also
edited The Wedge, a newspaper that serves the Lowry
Hill East neighborhood.

Since her election in 1993 Lisa has been known to
sweat the details, put in the hours, and speak her
mind. Lisa was overwhelmingly reelected in 1997
without party endorsement. She regularly goes to bat
for her constituents at Ctiy Hall and has a pragmatic,
results-oriented, can-do approach to politics.

Lisa is married to George Soule, a lawyer who serves
as volunteer Chair of the Minnesota Commission on
Judicial Selection. Lisa and George have two dogs-
Lex Luthor, Terror of the Wedge and Lois Lane,
Empress of Uptown. Lisa lives in the Lowry Hill East
neighborhood and is an avid reader, gardener,
and cook.

The non-partisan primary election is on Tuesday,
September 11th and the general election is on Tuesday,

November 6th.
