Robert Lilligren talked about his not getting featured in Lavender while
the Stonewall endorsed candidates were. Nothing new.

In the 1997 City Elections Bob Odden, a openly gay Libertarian
candidate, ran for City Council in the 9th Ward. He beat out the Green
Party candidate in the primary, and made it into the general election
against the DFL incumbent. But to Lavender it was like he was
invisible.

I remember asking the Lavender columnist who wrote a campaign summary
story on the various gay candidates why he didn't mention Bob in the
story. Bob is a bright, knowledgeable guy, was running very hard,
participated in the Gay Pride Parade, and had signs and volunteers
(including me) working the ward.

The columnist sheepishly admitted that he had written his column
initially as a DFL report (so only DFLer's were mentioned), and then
just reused it for Lavender. I guess I was the only person that noticed
something amiss. Shame on him, shame on Lavender.

There is a confusion in this town between the identity groups (and
special interests) and the DFL: what the primary loyalties are and which
interests are being served. The DFL insiders sometimes looks nothing
more than a collection of special interest groups squabbling over how to
share the fruits of victory and power. It isn't always clear whose
interests the party activists wearing two hats (DFL and their particular
special interest) are truly serving--other than their own, which goes
without saying.

I sometimes think about the ending of Animal Farm (I worship
Orwell)--with the pigs and the men sitting in the farmhouse drinking and
playing cards, and the other animals looking in from outside not being
able to tell the one from the other.
