What I've never gotten (even in the years back, when I was active with
Stonewall) is why DFL endorsement questions were even asked of folks. The
point of the Stonewall endorsement -- as a special interest group screening
-- is to screen candidates on GLBT issues -- issues that get missed
sometimes within the party as a whole. Since I've been active with LCR/MN,
I do know one thing: LCR/MN does not ask candidates whether they will
abide by Republican Party endorsement. It is the Republican Party's job to
do that.

In the case of Robert Lilligren, I believe 3 out of the 6 people screening
Robert told him that DFL endorsement was the stickler for them -- not the
way he answered the questions. All I know is there are lots of Gays within
the 8th ward who are actively supporting Robert's campaign. Stonewall
endorsement (or lack of) doesn't seem to make much difference. Issues like
the Motel, 35W plans, Codefor and building this neighborhood are more
important.

At the same time, it's worth mentioning that Stonewall this year has worked
very hard on screening for the different races. They should be commended
for that.

Regarding Matthea's post: if the DFL had a paid field director to get
delegates out to the city convention, perhaps things would have been
different. I don't think that's the problem. The real problem was
Sharon Sayles Belton couldn't motivate her own delegates. Consider the
post Dyna Slyter sent regarding writing to the Mayor's office and the
Mayor's campaign asking what she could do to help -- and getting deafening
silence in response.

Regarding whether the DFL convention was just a collection of lefties.
Sure, the folks who tend to go to those conventions tend to be left of
center within the Dems, and right of center within the GOP. That's the way
those things work. However, issues like the Target Center isn't just a
leftie issue. It's an issue of whether the powers that be in the City are
good stewards of the taxpayer dollars.
