http://www.citypages.com/databank/22/1067/article9550.asp Basim Sabri's famous comment regarding list member David Piehl is in print in this week's City Pages. Street Fighting Man By Burl Gilyard Neighborhood prophet or capitalist pariah. Basim Sabri doesn't care what people think of him--as long as they stay out of his way. ----------------------------------------------- Lots of quotes from listmembers. Basim gives David Piehl the BS "Pain in the A@@" award, stuff about the Motel Central controversy, the Ventura Village controversy, and about Sabri's longstanding vendetta with Lisa McDonald. David Piehl, Lisa McDonald, Corrine Zala, Jim Graham, Sabri, Wizard Marks and Brian Herron are quoted. >From the article regarding Sabri's most recent proposal two four-story buildings with retail on the first level, and a total of 34 housing units. This is exactly what folks in the neighborhood want -- but they don't want a plan that involves taking away existing properties from people who don't want to sell: "I think he's on the right track, and what I'm hearing from people is that they love it," gushes Herron. The comments on cnia-chat regarding the project seem to be supportive for the concept, but want Sabri to develop land on his own project. Wizard Marks -- a big Sabri booster and supporter, and DFL library board candidate recently sent out a broadcast message to 50 or so people, including CM Herron, MCDA people, NRP people, mayor's staff and neighborhood activists which stated (complete copy of email is posted on CNIA chat): Wizard Marks sez: Sabri showed the two buildings as taking out David Corel's house and Corrine Zala's vacant-boarded building. To get everyone's goat, his primary reason (ergo the big space on the North end of the buildings), he is saying that he wants the South end of the block. He is also saying something about the conditions at the South end of 3000 Second block--that it will not enhance his development to have 3045 Second as a neighbor because it's a vacant/boarded building. This is not just Sabri vs. CZala. This is two business people vs. each other. CZ wants the building to be her real estate office, someday, with her quarters above. Too, all those folks who continue to call the council office and ask why CMHerron doesn't take 3045 Second down, want 3045 painted. ---------------------------------------------- I called Council Member Herron's office regarding these calls. The office staff told me there have been two calls on this property -- one from Corrine Zala herself. So I'm curious about who these people who "continue to call the council office and ask why CMHerron doesn't take 3045 Second down" are. This sure seemed like news to the office staff. Seems like the Marks-Sabri slogan should be: "by any means necessary."
