I'd like to make a distinction between being a neighborhood
booster and a supporter of a particular developer.
I am a Central Neighborhood booster. No doubt about it. I
took on the Hosmer Library issue because I'm a Central
booster. I took on anti-crime activities for the same
reason, at on the board for the same reason. I clean up,
along with my neighbors Craig and Scott, all the trash from
Lake Street that collects at the corner of Lake and Oakland
(every day we do this).
Basim Sabri is a developer. Now I've only met a few
developers in my life and they seem to run to certain
characteristics--high energy, stubborn, nasty sometimes.
Sabri seems to fit into the group pretty readily. I figure,
as a consequence, that whatever developer comes in, he/she
will pretty much do the same things. What impressed me is
that he did a good job and he did it on time! What a
concept!
For ten years I wondered if we would ever get off the dime
with the Lake Street buildings. He did that quickly and
well. That's all we can probably ask of the developers who
show up.
So, no, I'm not a Sabri booster, I'm a Central booster.
Remember that line from the 10,000-year old man on Your Show
of Shows in the fifties? Question to 10,000yom, "did you
have cheers in the caves?" "Yes. Here's our cheer, 'the hell
with the rest, I'm for cave 76!'"
