since i have no children, but nevertheless pay 50% of my property taxes to
the school system, i speak in the theoretical.

it will be mighty hard to convince me that without the incessant drain-off
of tuition monies, talented teachers, and the brightest of students, it
doesn't take a death toll on the public school system. think how many more
school supplies, books, classes in the arts and sciences, could be offered
with all that cash, how you could motivate public school teachers if they
were being paid the same as private school instructors.

you might be able to motivate poor public school students if they didn't see
that their needs count for nothing, that they are the silt at the bottom of
the wine bottle, that they aren't entitled to computers, or a fixed roof or
even textbooks. it's pretty demoralizing to be the last in line, to feel
that others can't wait to escape. maybe the students would be more
motivated if the most privileged students weren't siphoned off and they
could actually see their fellow students not dumbing down, but caring and
working hard to do well. it's pretty hard to give a crap when you know
others, through no fault of your own, are getting more and better. i say
level the playing field.

maybe if middle class parents didn't flee to the suburbs or send their kids
to private schools, it would be an inspiration to other, less motivated,
parents, who feel inferior because their own education was lacking. they
could become the roles models for a meaningful and productive life.
private schools excel because the parents demand it. if those same parents
weren't preoccupied elsewhere, you can be sure they would be involved with
the public schools to ensure those same results. it's all about money.
therefore it IS all about class envy and they are being victimized. that's
how i see it.

ok, everyone, have at it.....
