I have two kids--one went through 12 years of Mpls public school (a
private, daycare kindergarten and 12 years in the MPS) and one has been in
MPS for 12.95 years (graduates this year).
We had our choice of schools. We had fun telling our suburban friends that
we were trying to decide between 6 different schools--they were shocked
when we said one private and 5 public--choice in public schools in NOT AN
OPTION in the 'burbs.
Both went to a K to 8 Continuous Progress school--one of the five learning
style options available at the time. The school overall was great. A
couple problems with a couple teachers that the school resolved immediately
(within 2 days, the teachers were reassigned).
One kid had attention deficit disorder--it did take a while to figure it
out since he wasn't hyper active. The services provided through the school
for ADD were great.
Nate graduated from North two years ago. Heather is graduating from South
this year. I think they both got above average education.
North has the only major market FM radio station run by kids. (daytime--the
professional staff takes over for drivetime, evenings and weekends). South
has seven foreign language options and it isn't even an International
Baccalaureate school. South is often in the top 10 schools in MN for
National Merit Scholars.
In neither school have we noticed any pressure to "wear the in clothes."
The diversity of dress at both schools is amazing (although I don't
remember every seeing anyone wearing a tie).
Could the school system be improved? YES. For one thing, while South does
a great job with kids who want to learn, the others fall through the
cracks.
And, have you noticed? I think all the major school shootings have been at
suburban schools.
