"Just thought with all the politics we could use
a little talk about the boys of summer on the list,
especially since our boys are so SPECIAL this summer,
by golly." --Barbara Nelson, Seward
I'm glad the Twins are doing well this year, but
exactly what makes them "our boys"? Personally, I see
a bunch of corporate-owned teams whose employees make
up to $100,000 PER GAME, and whose owners make even
more (not that that prevents them from always looking
for more public money for stadiums, etc.).
Are any of the Twins from here? Do any of them live
here during the off-season, or plan to after they
retire? I know that Kent Hrbek is a local, but my
impression is that the vast majority of pro athletes
today are mercenaries with very little ties to where
they play. The fact that so many people ("fans") buy
into and identify with pro sports, in my opinion, is a
testament to marketing.
Personally, I'd much rather play with my 18 month-old
son in one of the city's wonderful -- and free --
public parks than expose him to money-soaked pro
sports. Maybe we'll try a Saints game when he's a
little older . . .
