I appreciate the concern about appropriate decorum.
I want to remind list members that if they feel a post has violated the
rules (at http://www.e-democracy.org/mpls/), they should email me directly
at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I will handle it with the participants off list.
(This is a list rule.) The reason is to keep intramural disputes out of
people's in-boxes. The list shouldn't get bogged down in debating list
members' conduct - although I understand members' concern and appreciate it.
As long as I'm writing this "list rules" post, let me remind members of a
few strong recommendations to avoid breaking the decorum rule:
1. Write your responses to the list, not the member you are responding to.
When you address it to a member, the post is a lot more likely to be
personal and break the "no personal attack" rule.
2. Try not to speculate on someone's motives. This helps stick to the facts.
3. Inflamed language is rules violation because it detracts from idea-based
debate. Charges of corruption, dictatorial action, etc. should be reserved
for criminals and dictators, and require tough proof to avoid a warning from
me.
This is not a free-for-all. It's a discussion group. Our preamble states
"This forum is about open exchange and information sharing and not about
being right with one's ideology. Attempts to 'win' an online discussion are
discouraged." If you agreed to our membership rules, you in effect agree to
a reasonable discussion. I am not trying to censor people's opinions or
their facts, merely the distracting, inflamed characterizations & tactics
that so often distract and sidetrack valuable debate.
Needless to say, this applies to everyone, not just certain members. Should
you disagree, please feel free to email me directly or go to the Minneapolis
Rules forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mpls-rules.
Sincerely,
David Brauer
List manager
