The significance of the Kaplans' choice is less about Sharon Sayles Belton
than Lisa McDonald. The Kaplans did not support Sharon in 1993 but did
support Lisa in 1997 versus Niel Ritchie. In fact, they were McDonald's
honorary campaign co-chairs four years ago.
Some of us remember the Strib story that broke the day of the 10th ward DFL
convention. The paper linked the Kaplans' financial support of McDonald to
McDonald's support for a change in a city ordinance that would benefit a
Kaplan-owned business (a $600-a-year cut in the license fee for valet
parking rates in front of the New French Caf that used to be in Uptown.)
Whatever the ultimate merit of the story, it was an all-time case of bad
journalistic timing, hitting doorsteps literally the morning of the
convention. Strib editor Tim McGuire and managing editor Pam Fine later
publicly apologized to McDonald and Strib readers.
Anyway, the Kaplans seem to be going a different way this time (though it
should be noted this morning's Strib piece only quotes RT, not the Kaplans).
