As an artist and arts administrator, who has benefited from the Mpls. Arts Commission
(ArtiCulture getting a community grant as a startup) and some possible promotion the
Office of Cultural Affairs has done, I support what they do and the potential of what
they could do. It is one thing to shut down the department, it's another to put
people in place who can do the job well. Without naming names, there are people in
there who are doing a good job. That doen't mean that all of them are doing a good
job. Things seem to be spotty - biting off more than they can chew, trying to do too
much to fast and not planning well for the long haul. Even so I believe the potential
is still there if things are fine tuned a bit. The problem with situations like this
is when mistakes this big happen is that the city (and foundations) won't support
future arts projects that do have cultural value to the arts and the greater
community. I say to her "shape up or ship out".
