I agree that naming the school after Nellie Stone Johnson is exciting! I
was happy when I heard that the decision had been made to name the
school after her. I remember reading about the discussion in the
Hawthorne Vibe and thinking "I hope they choose Nellie". I have almost
finished reading the Nellie Stone Johnson book by David Brauer and I am
continuously amazed at the action she took to organize unions and to
stand up for and speak out for equal education, fair employment, fair
housing, and equal rights for all.

Since my mother watched the show, I had the misfortune of accidently
seeing a few of the shows as a child. I could not tolerate to watch the
show and, for that reason, I am annoyed that they are putting up a
statue for "her". But maybe from a marketing point of view, it will be
good for tourism. I much prefer that we put up statues to honor people
such as Nellie Stone Johnson.
