As issues director for Senate District 60 for the DFL,
I have been following the issues closely at the
capitol. It stinks. No way around it. I know
Margaret Anderson Kelliher, Scott Dibble, and Myron
Orfield are all working very hard for school funding.
Any calls to the Governor can't hurt. When I've had
my Green Party hat on,I've been following Dwayne
Vogeli's efforts-a teacher from Winona, MN-keeping
Green locals around the state active on the issue and
calling the Governor. Some Greens had a warm spot for
Jesse just because he was elected as a third party
candidate, breaking up the traditional political soil
if you will. Those sentiments have certainly faded
fast this session.

Several studies have shown that sales usually remain
constant for vending machines when healthier items are
put in place. The problem is profit margins may not
be as high as they are on junkier foodstuffs and
beverages. Some funding can still come from vending
but extracurricular activities should not be dependent
on them. Nutritional needs should trump profits.

One interesting idea I recieved off group was to
implement a 1 to 3% sales tax on ticket sales to
events at the Metrodome, Target Center, and perhaps
some other venues-such as the Orpheum and State
theaters. The individual who sent it to me argued
that we should put a small tax on adult
"extra-curriculars" to fund school extracurricular
activites. I thinks it's an interesting idea, though
it obviously needs some fleshing out.

For adequate school funding, David Strand
