David - this is a GREAT idea!!!!
There hasn't been much "official" recruiting for Minneapolis-Issues since
Steve Clift and I snared our first 100 three years ago (next month!). I
think I speak for everyone at E-Democracy when I say we would love help
making connections with the immigrant communities....especially if list
members with positive experience on the list are making the "introductions."
Long-term, any list should become a "distributed" task where members help
grow and improve it. I know many of you already have, but I want to extend
an explicit invitation to anyone with connections into Minneapolis's
immigrant communities to hook people up with us. This doesn't mean waiting
for organized meetings, either - if you know new Minneapolitans, try to get
them hooked up when next you see them! Obviously, we want to involve as many
segments of Minneapolis citizenry as possible. It's right-on to hear from
immigrants themselves - since issues surrounding recent arrivals are among
the city's biggest.

Thanks again for the terrific idea. Wild notion: if you can entice anyone to
Barbara's list get-together tomorrow at Stevens Square, that might be a
great place to get people started.

I think you should ask some Somalis what they think. I like the
face-to-face meetings of the Mpls-Issues listserv. We could arrange to
meet in one of the Somali coffee houses and work it out with the owners so
that they could recruit interested people to talk with us.
I know that every time I stop in for coffee at one of the many Somali
places, they always extend warm hospitality and ask me about American
culture that they don't understand.
Those guys are wired too. If we have a few meetings, we may get some new
members to this listserv.
