There are a number of issues that brother me about this "call." First and
foremost is that a "respect for diversity" is a more restrictive political construct
than a "respect for individual rights." Both constructs provide for the protection
of individuals from unwarranted attacks because of ethic background, however
a "lack" of respect for diversity can become grounds for persecution, but such an
attitude is still protected under a construct of rights. Thus, this construct of
"diversity"
permits the persecution of individuals for opinions that are Constitutionally
protected.
Therefore, I would gladly participate in a call for tolerance and the rights of
individuals,
but I will not participate in a demonstration for "diversity."
Secondly, while this call provides a wonderful photo opportunity for current
and future politicians, it should balanced by a "call" for the protection of all
residents of Minneapolis. "Think globally, act locally." Think global
terrorism, act to institute local precautions. The Green party needs to
acknowledge that terrorism, especially nuclear terrorism, is as much a threat
to life as is environmental pollution.
Thirdly, although I will be voting for Mr. Gordon in the election my wife,
who will be voting for the first time as an American (Hurray!), will not.
Basically because she believes that Mr. Gordon is all fluff and no substance.
I too am worried that Mr. Gordon's need for consensus will limit his
ability to push forward the Greens agenda, especially if Ms. Cherryhomes
is still leading the council. I would hope to see Mr. Gordon develop stronger
and more definitive positions on issues before election day.
