I appreciate Sonja Dahl's correction re: the 12th Ward. I was thinking that
Wade Russell had endorsed RT in the 12th, so the 9th was the only ward where
RT won but none of the finalists (including the certain-to-be-elected Gary
S.) endorsed him.

Also, with respect to Gary's post, I did use that most passive-aggressive of
words - "interesting," which Minnesotans often use so they don't have to say
what they really think.

However, in this case, I really was just wondering. I'm not Gary's
constituent, though his decisions (especially about council leadership) will
affect me. Obviously, he has to do what is best for his ward and the city. I
really did just want to find out what his thinking was, since it was
relatively unusual.

Gary writes:

>David Brauer says it is especially interesting that I have not endorsed
>RT. Yes, it is interesting. I'm an independent kind of guy, and I'm not
>going to be bullied into making declarations that I don't strongly believe.
>My candidate didn't get through the primary. You'll have to excuse me if
>I don't publicly embrace my second or third choice. How meaningful would
>that be, anyway?

I know Gary might be referring to Russ Peterson's post and not mine, but I
hope he doesn't confuse a question with bullying. These are explanations I
think the public deserves to have. I hate to see that drawbridge go up even
before inauguration day.

There's some not-kind stuff on this list, but there are a lot of legit
questions here too, like the one we're discussing. My advice is ignore the
nasty stuff and engage the honest questions, which I think is a public
service. (My advice to the public is not to be gratuitously snotty or
leaders you need answers from will stomp off. Yes, I will remember my own
advice.)

As for endorsing a second or third choice - sorry, it can be meaningful.
Some of us had second or third choices that were quite close to #1...others
didn't. One of these two is going to be mayor. Now, if you don't want to get
caught up in the rivalry, or you don't think there's a meaningful
distinction, that's fine, staying on the sidelines is cool. But I think
second or third choices can be ethically embraced, so don't rule out the
option so blythely.
