Lani,

I have to admit that I am really shocked! Not only because of the
obvious reason that I would have expected Paul to support disclosure of
campaign donations, but what is really amazing is that Paul would
criticize me for an activity that his own campaign representative
eagerly assisted. You see, i was unable to find Joan Campbell's
campaign disclosure report at the government center where it was
supposed to be. To my great frustration, i checked four days in a row
and for some reason it was not there. But then, to our good fortune, I
ran into Lisa Goodman at the Progessive Minnesota dinner, and she
informed me that her campaign manager had obtained a copy of Joan
Campbell's disclosure. One problem - she had already lent it to Paul
Zerby. So I went to the reliable e-democracy Minnneapolis candidate
directory and got Paul's phone number. I called and spoke to Betts
(Paul's wife and campaign manager). I told Betts exactly what i wanted
to do with the list - post the information on this list. Betts could
not wait for people to hear about Joan spending more than $500 of
campaign donations on a "campaign wardrobe." Betts faxed me the
disclosure immediately. I could not have shared all the information
about Joan's campaign finances with this list if were not for the
assistance of the Zerby's campaign. So you will understand if i find it
a bit ironic that Paul would now directely criticize me for sharing that
information.

In all seriousness, it really is completely wrongheaded to oppose any
sort of open access to relevant political information about our elected
officials. It is definitely not enough for people to have to go to an
office in the government center during business hours, and have to pay
$0.25 per page for copies. I happen to have the fortune to work
downtwon and do not have any boss to make sure i am at work. Many
others who are interested in information might not have that luxury.
Given that I am obviously opinionated, others should be able to obtain
this information themselves without having to rely on me. That is what
democracy should look like.
