I overheard one person who thought that the Hollman Near North redevelopment
hurt Jackie Cherryhomes. Jackie was probably the most public and most well
known cheerleading politician for this project. Hollman may or may not have
indeed hurt her, I do not have a good reading on the percentages of voters
who supported vs opposed the project. In light of Dean Carlson's information
that the previous residents were in fact not hurt with displacement, I have
been wondering why so many people oppose the development. By the way, is
Dean Carlson the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority project manager for
the Hollman Near North project? If so, then he should have the wherewithal
to obtain sound information on this topic.

Dean was quite articulate in expressing the reasons why the NAACP and the
Legal Aid Society filed the Hollman lawsuit in the first place. These
organizations brought this legal action forward for the purpose of giving
these poor public housing recipients a better life. They did not think it
was proper for the government to force people to live in a type of
concentration camp that was racially and economically segregated and
isolated from the rest of society.

This lawsuit was for the purpose of improving the lives of poor people. If
Jackie was hurt by Hollman, then it may be because there was, in the minds
of many, a perception that the emphasis had changed from 'helping the poor'
to 'doing the redevelopment deal'.
