A modest proposal for K-12 school: Any person who regularly works in a Minneapolis public school (for pay from a public agency), and who works with students, must take and pass the 8th grade reading and math tests.
Reason: All school personnel are potentially role models and shapers of behaviors, values and ambitions. If a person can not demonstrate the rudimentary capability we expect from our students, we should not pay them to set poor examples for our kids. I would hope that all teachers, classroom aides, administrators, health personnel and social workers would meet this requirement. Additional "multiple intelligences" are nice, but shouldn't basic ability to read and figure be mandatory. With the automation and computerization of many of the "industrial age's" unskilled and semi-skilled jobs, such basic skills are necessary for independent survivial in "post-industrial" America.
