Diane:

You are right. A continuous path around the top of Powderhorn would make the
park safer.
The path around the top of Powderhorn was in the NRP plan and in the Park
Board's plan. I thought it was to be included in with all the other work
that was done at Powderhorn. Then the work started, and was finished, but
there was no path along the north rim. Why it disappeared is not clear.
"Well, we ran out of money and had to cut something." "We didn't think there
was enough room between the curb and the slope" "We'll try to get it into
the next phase." These are some of the responses I have gotten from staff
about it. It is not uncommon for some items to be removed from park
renovations because the money does not stretch to cover all items in the
plan. The path, however, was a high priority, it should have been done. It
did not get done, it is as much my fault as anybody's. I am sorry. I was
unable to get it done. Perhaps Marie can make it happen.

While we're talking about parks and streets and reducing crime and all that,
Annie, can you tell me why we don't have a bike/skating path at Powderhorn?
I
thought it was in an NRP plan years ago, but it never happened. Dean kept
telling me he would look into it, but I never got an answer. I know that it
would make the park safer here -- more people would use it for exercise.
And it
wouldn't interfere with the calm walks people like to take around the park
since
it could be around the top and everybody walks around the pond. By the way,
we
have not had a lot of problems in Powderhorn in recent years, but there is a
perception that it isn't safe and also there isn't as much use as there
could
be, and a path would go a long way towards getting people here.
