I agree with Fred. This is politics. These kind of situations go with the turf. If these folks want a warm and fuzzy work environment this is not the job for them. Reading the paper today I thought Minneapolis didn't look very good. I'm not sure the council even wanted this facilitation session. It's the mayor's idea. Let's take a page from St. Paul and get on with taking care of the big problems facing the city.

As to CM Lane, I'm not surprised he got bounced from Ways and Means. First of all, it wasn't because he was an independent. This year's budget session, which had a tax increase, shows he just like the rest of the Democrats.
His comment that "he was tired of being treated poorly by the rest of the council" sums it up. He has long had an attitude that he doesn't need to engage with the rest of the council and that he is "better". That is what got him bounced off of Ways and Means. Johnson on the other hand took the time to make an overture or talk to everyone on the council, old and new alike, and that probably explains her success.

After seeing CM Barret Lane's frown-y face in the metro section this
morning, I can see how "up to 34 hours @ $175/hr" has some appeal, but I
wonder about the need to commit up to 34 hours of our CM's valuable time
to what really amounts to hand-holding sessions. The 13-member council
will be mighty busy and the council committees provide interesting
small-group sessions, do they not?

It strikes me that doing the city's work will be the best therapy.
Coping with personnel changes, agency reorganization, budget shortfalls,
constituent pressure, and endless meetings from H**L will surely
generate intense bonding and intuitive understandings, whatever the
policy differences.

And, oh my, the forces outside our borders. We will need to work
together, as R.T. so eloquently suggests, elected people and citizens
alike. No need for a therapist to get that point.
