I'm personally disappointed with how this organization process played out
at City Hall. But I'm not going to dwell on that now. I will, however,
stand up to the criticism of Councilmember Barret Lane. Lane is and has
been a dedicated, knowledgeable, hard working, smart and honest elected
official in Minneapolis. As the mayor said, he "knows the budget backwards
and forwards." To characterize his remarks--made out of understandable
frustration--as "junior high" behavior truly is unfair. This is serious
business and Lane is legitimately upset with what took place.

I also disagree that he hasn't engaged other elected officials. He
obviously does or he wouldn't have earned the respect of Paul Ostrow and
Mayor Rybak and several other colleagues who wanted him to chair Ways and
Means. I'd also like to point out that--despite being treated well by
colleagues--Dennis Schulstad never chaired the Ways and Means Committee in
his 20-plus years on the council.
