Michael Atherton wrote, "Or we might also discuss the fact that the
individuals posting in support of early elections, you, Ms. Khan, Mr.
Brauer, and Mr. Melendez are stanch DFL supporters."
For the record, I am a staunch [sic] supporter of the DFL Party, but
I have not posted "in support of early elections." In fact, I have not made
up my mind on that issue. My messages on the subject were simply
identifying false arguments in Michael's messages: first his claim that
Phyllis Kahn's bill "circumvents the will of the voters" when "the voters"
have never been asked about the issue, then his claim that "the conventional
(and ethical) way to remove council members you are unhappy with is by
recall election" when there is no such provision in the law. I can see
good, factually supportable arguments in favor of the bill, and good,
factually supportable arguments against it. But Michael's statements were
just muddying the waters with inaccurate facts and assumptions--now
including his misstatement of where I stand.
I may end up agreeing with Michael's underlying conclusion. I don't
think that either view, for or against the Kahn bill, necessarily helps or
hurts any particular political party, as I have written before and as Dore
Mead has eloquently explained. But whichever view one takes, I would rather
get there on the basis of correct facts and factually supportable arguments.
