In answer to David Piehl's missie of Tuesday: No. The
$800,000 got mentioned in the context of the FBI sting in
which Herron wore a wire. The sting, being FBI engineered,
followed a script written by, guess who? The fibbies. The
conversation during which Herron took money from Ortega was
also engineered by the FBI--again, fibbies' script.
This is a part of the issue. Since the first publicized FBI
sting, there have been serious questions about the fibbies'
methods and the situations to which they apply their
methods. This is a serious civil liberties issue.
I'm suggesting that, at the time of the Ortega-to-Herron
sting, the FBI had bupkiss on Herron and no way they could
design to get to Sabri's records and, hence, Sabri.
Once they had Herron good and scared, they developed the
Herron-to-Sabri sting.
My scenario:
I and willing to bet money that Ortega did not go to the FBI
originally but that they came to him because he had done
something big and illegal. I think that Ortega made some
deal with the FBI to save his own sorry fanny, and that deal
started the whole ball rolling and that the deal included
putting Herron in the cross-hairs.
For federal prosecutions, it is not necessary that the FBI
release transcripts of their sting tapes to the press, nor
that they send out exerpts of those tapes, "judiciously"
edited.
