Man, I wish people on this list had given my post
asking for opinions on "What is Community Development"
this much attention.

But, I will throw my two cents worth in here too. I
like the idea of Dairy Queen. Of all of the ice cream
places suggested here, it can definitely be considered
the "low cost provider". Some people can't afford $3
for an ice cream cone. The smaller and tonier ice
cream establishments tend to charge a great deal more
than DQ for their product.

I would also wager a guess that DQ ice milk cones
would be easier to handle than waffle cones with Mocha
Latte ice cream in them for the stroller mom set with
small kids.

As for the carob vs. chocolate and the ice milk vs.
green tea ice cream set. Well.....you might have to
stop at the Wedge or Whole Foods on your way to the
Lake.

I definitely do not support the Park Board attempting
to run this concession themselves. No bad judgments
against the park board on this one. I just think they
have enough on their plates right now to worry about
serving up ice cream.

To the person who accused DQ of taking advantage of
the poor to serve the rich, I say:

DQ has always given great opportunities to youth who
work at DQ. I am sure thousands of corporate
executives, doctors, lawyers, teachers, ministers,
environmentalists, anarchists, etc. worked at DQ for a
summer at some time in their lives. DQ was always been
flexible in scheduling work hours so you could be
involved in activities. They have given a great
number of kids good skills to move on to better jobs.
You gotta start somewhere. Why not DQ? When I was in
high school, I had friends that worked there. My
first job was at Baskin Robbins. To this day, I hate
licorice and pink bubble gum ice cream. But, I can use
a cash register, a food scale, and scoop up a five
ounce ice cream ball. Not that I use these skills
much these days, but I always have them to fall back
on if I need them.

As far as serving the rich: Get real! Go to the DQ on
Franklin and 5th Av. There aren't any rich people
standing in line there. If there are, it's because
they got lost. Phillips and Whittier people use that
DQ all summer long and most of us living there are far
from rich. We put up with pan handlers, drunks, crack
heads, and crazy people just to get a little ice milk
cone on a hot summer night. I prefer the crunch cone
myself.
