I agree with you Greg and wonder the same thing.  My partner and I have a three year old son and live just south of downtown.  I joked with my partner when we were driving to St. Paul, for the third time in a month, that we should think about moving to St. Paul to save the long trip.

We often go to the downtown Minneapolis library and go to lunch somewhere to make it a "day" downtown.  But besides the library there doesn't seem to be much else to do with a toddler.  (I would shop more downtown if the stores offered strollers for parents of small kids.).  Any ideas anyone?

Subject: [Mpls] Kiddos & Minneapolis

I goofed around with my 2 1/2 year old in downtown Minneapolis for most of this morning after riding the bus in.  We had bagels, played in the skyways (he calls them bridges--I'll straighten him out), took in the fountains in Gavidae and Crystal Court, talked a lot about the cool model of the IDS Center on the skyway level of Crystal Court, visited some folks in housing court briefly (yes, housing court), played cars at the new fountain in Government Center, "tunnelled" over to City Hall and even peeked into the City Council meeting going on (his first civics lesson, resulting in pointing out every door and exlaiming a meeting was going on behind it).

We had a lot of fun, but I wondered why downtown Minneapolis has nothing specifically FOR kids.  It's a real deficit.  Obviously, we make a lot of fun out of what is there and I'm not dissing that, but there is a distinct difference between downtown Minneapolis and, for example, downtown St. Paul when it comes to kids, especially small kids. There are things in downtown St. Paul specifically for kids (the Children's Museum and the Science Museum for two), not just things to play with along the way.

Anyway, my thoughts, and wondered what others may think about this somewhat light topic for which I'm not upset at all, just, y'know, wondering.
