Greg Luce talked about a visit with a 2 1/2 year old to downtown. I agree that Minneapolis lags St. Paul in things for kids to do downtown. St. Paul has the Science Museum, the History Center, the Childrens Museum and the Capitol Building.
However, I did want to mention a couple cool kid things that he may have missed, or may not be season appropriate: The Army Corp of Engineers' northern most Lock and Dam on the Mississippi, with an observation deck--more fun though in summer with boats going through. (Where are all the barges of yesteryear?) The nearby Stone Arch Bridge (and a "trolley" ride that goes over it. Also the view into the coming Mill Ruins Park. Daytons, oops, Marshall Field's annual storybook depiction on the 9th floor at Christmas time. The wonderful, whimsical "stone people" scuptures in the plaza of the new federal courts building. They are mugging and hiding all over the plaza, and fun for kids and adults to pick out. (My wife especially likes them and took the grandkids over to see them last time they were in town.)
