Valdis Rozentals asked if people were seeing more instances of pedestrians crossing
out of turn, and I think it would be remiss of me not to mention that I replied
offlist that I did--Seventh and Nicollet Mall is one place were people run en masse
against the light to beat the oncoming cars.

And it's not just teen-agers; adults, people in suits, parents with children run right
into the intersection. It's bad. Oftentimes I am the lone person waiting for the
"walk" sign. (And even then I do my near-360-circle with my head before I step out.)

That stuff does irritate me, especially since I work in a non-pedestrian friendly area
and sometimes fear that a driver rightfully irked over such behavior will take it out
on me while I'm running for my life to cross First Street N. at Hennepin before the
"don't walk" sign stops blinking. First Avenue N. and First Street N. is also
harrowing at times.

As to bicycling, I would love to stay on the sidewalk. That so-called "bike lane" down
the middle of Hennepin has never been used by me. Cars and buses drive over it all the
time. When I'm at a red light with my bike and a car signalling to turn right pulls up
behind me, I pull my bike onto the sidewalk if I can to let the car turn. I have
received waves and "thank yous" yelled out the window.

Come to think of it, I was taught when first learning to ride a bike that when
appropriate, bike-riders were to pull onto the sidewalk and let a car pass. Is this no
longer a rule?
