Just in case you thought no general fund/unrestricted money was going into
this proposal, in addition to the downtown only 1% tax the current proposal
also calls for a "Downtown Parking Surcharge" estimated to raise 3.9 million
annually.
This is a 25 cent per car additional charge per turn above and beyond
parking fees and taxes on cars parking in both Municipal and Private parking
ramps downtown. I wonder if monthly parking contracts are exempt?
If increasing municipal parking fees downtown is a good idea for funding a
stadium why not for housing, 24 hour snow plowing or most importantly
dealing with the Cities financial challenges.

the concept certainly hasn't.
Why do Rybak and Ostrow think people living and working
downtown should pay
more for a stadium than anyone else? In Ostrow's case its
probably easier
to tell his constituents that somebody else is paying the
bill. Maybe its
good campaign material "I got you a stadium and they're the
ones paying for
it"
Those of us living and working downtown are already paying
additional sales
taxes for the Minneapolis Convention Center, anyone else
have a pet project
for us to pay for?
If you think a stadium is something the public should pay
for, why not pay
for it with general tax dollars? Why just tax some people
based on them
being kind of near where we think we'll build the thing?
Does anyone really think any type of dedicated taxes are a
good idea?
Well, I guess we have another stadium financing scheme that
needs to go down
to the garbage burner.
