Of course demographics play a role in the siting and success of groceries
and other businesses, and the demographics for this area are daunting. The
infamous Lydia House project site is 1/2 block from the store that is
closing. Currently, within 1/4 mile of Lydia House, 28% of the residential
population is disabled and in special housing that requires on-site
supervision.

We all want a good grocery, and I think that through the diligent efforts of
the community and enlightened property owners I think we'll eventually get
one. But let's not kid ourselves. There is nothing easy about this site for
a new grocery, especially when Plymouth Church and the City of Minneapolis
intend to raise the disabled population to over 30% (and beyond) in spite of
City laws that prohibit such concentration.
