My take on this is that I get better exercise going up and down hills, so I tend to 
aim for
rolling routes, rather than flat routes, as long as the distance is similar. It takes 
me a little
longer (I'm still relatively slow up hills), but when I am on the flats, I've got a 
lot better
muscles for accelerating away from lights or going fast enough to hit the lights on 
Hennepin when
I need to.

I'm self-employed, so I'm generally not in a hurry to get somewhere. I can take the 
time to make a
commute a better workout, rather than biking for speed. Or stop and enjoy the scenery 
or whatever.
