Ditto. See "Effective Cycling", <http://www.johnforester.com/BTI/ectraining.htm> >Washington Ave .... has one extremely important asset .... it's almost completely >flat. My take on this is that I get better exercise going up and down hills, so I tend to aim for rolling routes, rather than flat routes, as long as the distance is similar. It takes me a little longer (I'm still relatively slow up hills), but when I am on the flats, I've got a lot better muscles for accelerating away from lights or going fast enough to hit the lights on Hennepin when I need to. >The most important thing to do for yourself, though (especially at first), >is to leave yourself enough time to get to work on time without absolutely >killing yourself. This is one rule I break *way* too often. I'm self-employed, so I'm generally not in a hurry to get somewhere. I can take the time to make a commute a better workout, rather than biking for speed. Or stop and enjoy the scenery or whatever.
