I am not sure that I understand where the rating of the "finest" park system
is coming from. We have a good park system but it has slipped dramtically in
the last few years. Just a couple of days ago I went by Brackett Park on a
beautiful sunny summer evening. My son commented that he remembered when the
tennis courts used to packed and he had to wait to play. His friend replied
that he remembered when the tennis courts were tennis courts. I glanced over
and saw that the courts were in great disrepair. So sad. Especially after
we just built that beautiful new park building.

>From earlier discussions regarding the 6% decrease (4.58 million) in the
budget, I calculated that the proposed budget for the park system would be
approximately 72 million. Just last Thursday the Pioneer Press wrote that
the 2003 budget for St. Paul's park system was around 27 million. Maybe I am
visiting the wrong parks but St. Paul's seen to be in better shape than ours
for significantly less money.

I would like to add that one of my objections to the purchase of the building
is that it is located on the river. Has anyone calculated the lost tax
revenue on this real estate? I think that looking at other buildings makes
sense if ownership is actually the best course. The Ramar building on
Franklin is an excellent suggestion.
