Regarding Terrelbrown's comments:

Shortly after Nicollet Mall was opened to bicylists in 1993, Metro Transit was
involved in a fatal accident with a bicyclist on Nicollet Mall. As a result Metro
Transit is very sensitive about our relationship with bikes. On the one hand, every
one of our new buses will have a bike rack (and we have applied for funds to retrofit
current buses with bike racks). On the other hand we supported the effort to restrict
bike traffic on the Mall and paid to help the city build lanes on downtown streets
especially for bikes. Hope this provides some perspective.

Walking back from lunch today I noticed an interesting police activity
in front of the Target office building on the mall:

The transit cops (3 of them) were stopping bicyclist riding up the
mall. Now, I know we have this stupid city ordinance that says they
can't do that. Its right up there with the ordinance CM Schiff can't
rent a room in their house because that would be to many people whom
the city considers "unrelated". Maybe one of the cops should
have been tagging the unmarked squad for being illegally parked on the
sidewalk.

Reminds me of a few years back when the park cops were running radar on
the Lake Harriet bike path.

Now, how many police departments do we really need in this town?
