The Gaze Guide covered the Horn Terrace National Night Out/Melissa Schmidt
Memorial

But not one elected official who spoke on this campaign trail mentioned the
officer's dedication to the GLBT community at the annual Pride Parade or
Pride Festival, to the Out Officer's liaison group, or to the same
Minneapolis Police Department which is one of the most progressive in the
nation for providing support for the robust Out Officer's liaison group.

EY: Gaze Guide mentions the DFL elected officials present at this
event. Unfortunately, they failed to note that Mary Kiffmeyer was the only
statewide elected official to attend.

<snip> Gaze Guide gives kudos for Southwest Journal

There was a young man there who looked like he might have fit the
stereotype of a throw-away gay homeless youth who was obviously moved by
this display of public grieving, there were staff from OUTFront Minnesota
who have helped the Out Officers group form itself into a viable workplace
alliance, there were openly Gay and Lesbian elected officials, but those
who knew, kept it to themselves.
The SW Journal neighborhood weekly newspaper demonstrated its premier
status as one of the best neighborhood newspapers in the Twin Cities by not
mincing words in its coverage of Officer Schmidt:
"Schmidt was adept not only at representing the community as a whole, but
also the gay and lesbian community, of which she was openly a part," it
reported.

=====================================
This is an example of where the gay press is still valuable. The
mainstream media, and politicians avoided mentioning this part of Schmidt's
life. If she had been involved with Pride, it seems that the Minneapolis
elected officials should have been aware of that and mentioned that in
addition to her other accomplishments.

And just in case people are interested, Gaze informs us that:

A memorial fund for Schmidt has been set up at P.O. Box 158, Dresser, WI 54009
