Through our NRP office, SECIA, we petitioned for speed bumps and got them. It happened in two phases.
First the city installed the temporary bumps (similar to the ones they install in alleys that are April 1 to October 1 only). I actually prefer these for slowing traffic but I expect you can't run a snow plow over them. Tney are high, rigid and only about 12" wide.'' The seasonals got taken off at the end of the summer and we went the next year with nothing, while one concerned neighbor circulated a petition to get a permanent set of bumps. A year after that petition, we got our permanent speed bumps. I notice there is a big difference in bumps. Kenwood has some that don't even slow me down unless I think about it--which, usually, I don't. Ours on Talmage Ave. will give you a nasty jolt. If you want to keep driving your car, you will probably not speed over them the second time on purpose. One is installed half way down from a railroad crossing berm and that one gets people's attention. There is a series of them on Cole Ave. SE because of all the townhouses at the end of Cole. (People just have to speed that last block and a half like it makes a difference.) When that was installed, I could scraoe the bottom of my little Geo on them with no trouble. One of the funniest sights was some people from the second precinct came out one night to test those bumps but while I was driving a common car in the neighborhood (the Geo) and having trouble with the bumps on Cole, the police from the 2nd precinct were testing the bumps with an SUV, which, of course, had no trouble at all. On the otherhand, maybe they were just testing the SUV?? I asked one of the officers several times what they were doing and all she'd do is smile at me and shake her head. Maybe she was just to embarrassed to admit it. Anyway, start the petitions for speed bumps.
