Without invoking too much religion (1/2 of the last post was here.) I would like to respectfully submit that different people work different ways, therefore, the design of a graphical user interface is purely subjective.
I think the driving factor in schools should be based upon the needs of industry and higher education of their students. I would note that both UNIX and Windows are used where I am at UMN, but Macs are very, very sparse.
