Since Jim is wading into the role of list manager, the real one feels compelled to pipe up:
Jim writes: > Since this attack was done to support Peter McLaughlin, no matter how > miss-guided, I ask Peter to also respond to this. It simply is not enough to > let this lay. IF Peter McLaughlin does not have certain knowledge that such > allegations are true then it is inclement upon him to also say so publicly. Wizard published an apology on the list. Just as, ultimately, she admitted there was no evidence to support her slur of Eddie - an unfortunate, belated, but ultimate correcting of the record. Likewise, there is no evidence to support a slur that McLaughlin was behind what Wizard wrote. Two wrongs don't make a right. No McLaughlin response is necessary. Can we please take a lesson from Wizard's irresponsibility? That is, keep our sordid guesses and conspiracy theories off the list. Instead, please discuss things we experience as Minneapolitans and issues that will help make our city a better place to live. It's a discussion list, people, not a pound-of-flesh party. If this list becomes a sewer of slurs, it dies. Do your part in keeping it out of the gutter. Also, a clarification for members who asked me to investigate inaccurate claims such as Wizard's: 1. I have a life, and there are so many hours in the day. This list already takes up enough time. 2. Fundamentally, each member is responsible for their own words - including being sued if they're stupid enough to libel someone. I am not a finder of fact and do not plan to incur legal liability by becoming one. 3. If someone has slimed you, take a chance and email them directly, give them the facts, and ask them to post an apology. If that doesn't work, e-mail me, and I'll help figure out what to do, both for your sake and the list's. Don't keep a rule-breaking personal slime war going on the list. 4. Our list rules are designed to police decorum, not serve as a court of law. Libelous or near-libelous posts draw warnings (as this one did) not because they are illegal, but because they are against our rules. Finally - there's been another rash of "I know I can only post twice but here's a third post..." postings or "I know I'm not supposed to act as list manager but I'm going to do it anyway..." posts. These are both forbidden by the rules that you agreed to when you joined. They will draw warnings should they happen. If you need to respond to something after you've burned your posts, email me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I may in some cases allow a third post, but after you use your two, it's my call - to preserve fairness for all. Likewise, if you want a list ruling, ask me. It's the only way to avoid being warned or possibly expelled yourself. This is done to keep the list focused on issues, not personalities or ridiculous feuds. If something isn't working for you, try getting satisfaction from me - don't drag the whole list further into chasing its tail.
