One of the last of the great elms on my block was felled today. When it
hit the ground, my house shook. It was easily 36" in diameter and it's
great crown shaded two houses and blocked the late Western sun during
the height of summer. That huge tornado which passed down my block in
the early 80s pulled out all but two of the elms on the East side of the
block and left those on the West side.
The city's been good with us. They've replaced each of the felled trees.
It's still sad, though, to see the huge hole left in the canopy with the
loss of this tree.
