The main preventative measure they use is the quick removal of infected trees, to try to protect the other trees on the street.
If you want, you can hire a tree firm to treat an elm in front of your house, at your own expense. I believe that the Park Board Forestry Division even has a list of reputable firms that you can hire. Call them at 612-370-4900 and ask.
Another item: the Park Board is prompt about removing diseased trees, but not so prompt about replacing them. (They try to schedule replacement planting for a whole group of removed trees at once.) If you don't want to wait, you can buy and plant your own tree in the boulevard in front of your house. All they ask is that you call the Park Board Forester (612-370-4900) and discuss with them the type of tree you want to plant. They are pretty good in discussing the pros & cons of various types of trees.
