To go the full distance next Tuesday, we will all be onsite at the
polling place at 6:00 am, open the polls at 7:00 am, close the polls at
8:00 pm (maybe later if there's a line waiting to vote), and then
process absentee ballots, run the optical scanner tapes, count all the
supplemental ballots by hand (2500-3000 folks voting for U. S. Senator
in our large precinct), and put it all away, including taking certain
materials back to election headquarters. For election judges in their
retirement years, this is a very long day indeed. Small wonder those
grey heads make mistakes in the wee hours.
