Given all the election turmoil this season, I called to volunteer as an election judge in my local precinct (hence a Mpls issue!), offering to spend the night counting ballots. To my chagrin, I found that as an independent voter, being unaligned with any major political party, I was ineligible to serve as an election judge. Thus, while I have an extremely good record of voter turnout in recent years, have volunteered to help in past/current political campaigns, have run for public office myself, and am a combat veteran who put it all on the line for my country, I'm not allowed to serve as an election judge on election day. Others can register to vote on election day; we talk of letting non-citizens vote in local elections, but I'm not allowed to be an election judge! How totally ridiculous and insulting!!
