I read the City Pages article, and it was a good one. But I didn't see a single thing in it that foreshadowed Tyesha's death. Seems to me that they are related but separate stories. The only link is the claim that the police are understaffed and overworked. But if CODEFOR had been used, it would have drawn police AWAY from where Tyesha lived. So, it would have helped make her death more, not less, likely. And given the amount of time it takes to train NEW officers, an increase in police would have come too late. If anything can be faulted, it was the reassignment of Mpls police from the gang strike force, which the article didn't even mention. _____________________________________________
What Ms. Heller says is true and not. Neighborhood bullies may or may not push businesses out of town. To say for sure, you'd have to really investigate each business that moves. Some are just poorly-run businesses. The MAJORITY of small businesses fail. It is so easy to get into a business for which there isn't a breakeven market. And even when the market is good, lots of people need to fail in business to find out they lack the basic skills of an entrepreneur. There are a limited number of things a city can do for startup businesses since most assitance will be wasted on people who are poor managers. And, Vicky, it is nonsense to say you cannot tell people what to do with their own property. Otherwise, how can we close houses of prostitution? How can we force people to mow their lawns. Heck, Vicky seems to me your gated community has STRICT rules about maintaining the desirability of the community. How do you live with that with your beliefs that "what I do is nobody else's business". No, if this city is to remain liveable, we have to maintain standards both for what businesses are acceptable but how seedy properties become. That's the essence of civilization. ===== ========================================= Jim Mork----Cooper Neighborhood "Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God" ---Matthew 5:9 United for Peace http://www.unitedforpeace.org/new/ __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
