My apologies to Britt Robson on this one. He is right--I should have gone back and reread the story, and my comment would have been different on this list. The "not true" phrase is in reality a reaction to questions I get at times as to whether I am actively planning, or some group in which I'm involved is actively planning, to sue NRP. That is not true. But Britt reporting that the coalition I am in believes there are grounds for a lawsuit against NRP is true.
Again, my apologies to Britt. Leveling a "not true" charge against an accurately reported story is pretty damning to a journalist, and I should have been more circumspect and accurate. Gregory Luce St. Paul Greg Luce recently posted: "I've been quoted in City Pages some time back in a story that indicated that the tenant coalition I'm in plans to sue NRP. Not true. I was asked if there are legal grounds for a lawsuit, and I indicated that there very well may be--either in challenging the statutory application of NRP or on the grounds that it, in practice, violates the Fair Housing Act. But, that's a rather big political fish to fry and one that I'm not personally endorsing, primarily because I believe NRP can effectively be reformed." I am the one who wrote the City Pages story referred to by Luce. I wish he had gone back and actually reread the story (it's at citypages.com/databank/23/1132/article10628.asp) before putting the words "not true" into his post. Contrary to Luce's assertion, my story never "indicated that the tenant coalition [Luce] is in plans to sue NRP." For the record, Luce is quoted as being "actually somewhat optimistic" about his ability to work with NRP proponents to fix flaws in the program. The only reference to a lawsuit is a sentence in which I say that Luce believes his tenants group "has grounds to initiate a lawsuit challenging the NRP's failure to comply with its legally mandated responsibilities." The only way the City Pages story is an inaccurate depiction of current circumstance (it has never been "not true") is if Luce now believes his tenants group has no grounds for a lawsuit, regardless of whether he and his group intend to file one.
